The Government of Japan and the Japan World Expo 2025 Committee (hereinafter "the Committee") have been conducting activities at home and abroad seeking to host the World Expo 2025. From July 21, the Committee took the initiative to begin an event-oriented campaign in which Pokemon, one of the Committee's "Special Envoys (Mascot Characters)," boosts bidding activities at the Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo in Ikebukuro and elsewhere in Japan as part of efforts to win the bid to host the World Expo.

The campaign website "Pokemon EXPO Type Check" was launched in June to help people support the bidding activities together with Pokemon, and "original goods featuring Pokemon and the World Expo bid" began to be distributed from July 21 in the second phase of the campaign. In Japan where summer vacation already started, many people, mainly children and young people, flock to 26 Pokemon Centers/Pokemon Stores (facilities to offer information on Pokemon and sell Pokemon-themed goods) across the country every day where original goods are distributed.

The Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo in Ikebukuro, one of the campaign venues, was crowded with smartphone-carrying children and Pokemon fans from Japan and abroad.

As for "Pokemon EXPO Type Check," each visitor is diagnosed as one of the designated types after answering 10 questions about Pokemon and the World Expo. Then, each visitor can receive an original photograph (a supporter's certificate) taken together with Pokemon which varies from one type to another. Fifty-four Pokemon appear in the type check, allowing visitors to be excited about which Pokemon picture he or she can get.

This campaign is designed to help people enjoy supporting Japan's bid to host the World Expo together with Pokemon. In fact, it is not only enjoyable but constitutes an activity with social significance. As its rationale for hosting the World Expo, Japan is committed to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Each supporter's certificate of "Pokemon EXPO Type Check" lists the outcome of diagnosis as one of the goals. In short, visitors can touch on the World Expo and the SDGs through Pokemon while having fun, constituting important educational activities on social issues for young generations.

As the host of the World Expo is decided in November this year, each candidate country's campaign is entering the final stretch. To contribute to achieving the SDGs, Japan, setting out the theme of "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," has broached the idea of making the World Expo work toward solving problems faced by countries of the world rather than developing itself. To realize the SDGs' concept of "inclusiveness," Japan is conducting bidding activities involving not only the Government and business people but also the general public, including children and young people. Pokemon, which is popular among young people who have never experienced a World Expo, and a famous entertainer in Japan have become "Special Envoys" to serve as a bridge between state-level goals and grass-roots level interests.

If Japan wins its bid to host the World Expo, it will be the first such event to be held in Japan in 20 years since Aichi Prefecture hosted the World Expo 2005. The World Expo 2025 will attract attention not only from neighboring countries but from around the world with the help of Pokemon's power.

BEST'S BRIEFING: REGULATORY SHIFT IN CHINA LIKELY TO BOOST STANDING OF HONG KONG REINSURERS

HONG KONG, July 31 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- A recent agreement that gives qualified reinsurers in Hong Kong preferential regulatory treatment over offshore reinsurers is expected to boost Hong Kong’s standing as a risk management hub in Asia providing reinsurance capacity and expertise, according to a new A.M. Best briefing.
 
The new Best’s Briefing, “Hong Kong Reinsurers to Receive Preferential Treatment from China Regulator,” discusses the agreement between the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission and the Insurance Authority of Hong Kong that will allow mainland insurance companies that cede business to qualified Hong Kong reinsurers to be subject to a lower reinsurance credit risk charge. Previously, Hong Kong reinsurers were grouped with other offshore reinsurers and assigned baseline risk charge factors for credit risk exposure that were much higher than those applicable to onshore reinsurers.
 
The change is expected to encourage Mainland China insurers to give priority to high-quality Hong Kong reinsurers over other offshore reinsurers in placing reinsurance. A.M. Best expects the agreement to enhance Hong Kong reinsurers’ competitiveness in China and promote Hong Kong as a risk management platform for Chinese cedents, particularly in support of the country’s Belt and Road Initiative. This arrangement also could attract new capital to Hong Kong for those interested in tapping into the Chinese reinsurance market.

Japanese startup company creates platform to secure personal data

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- A distributed personal data storage platform with capability to secure and perpetually saving personal data has been introduced by alt Inc -- a startup and developer of 'al+' P.A.I (Personal Artificial Intelligence), headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan.

The storage platform -- al+ stack -- uses a distributed personal data platform designed for individuals to have full ownership of their own personal data, a statement said.

The platform with both encryption and blockchain technologies is to assure the confidentiality of all kinds of data associated with individuals including text and images and to prevent the data from being falsified.

It also comprises three elements which are storage memory, a stack data collector and a 'stack' device which the platform will make available for both individual and business use.

Users of the platform are able to reclaim ownership of their data with explicit rights to their own data. It also enables users to take full control over how data is used as individual users can selectively allow access to their personal data depending on the services they use.

Currently, businesses are limited to the use of data they collect. When individual users have the option to make their own data available, it will allow businesses to access activity and content that users have accumulated with other services.

Chinese e-Commerce announces offer price of IPO at US$19

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- Pinduoduo Inc (Pinduoduo) -- one of the leading Chinese e-commerce players -- announced the pricing of its initial public offering of 85.6 million American Depositary Shares (ADSs) at a price of US$19 or RM 77.33 per ADS. (1US$ = RM 4.07).

The company´s total ADSs is equivalent of 342.4 million Class A ordinary shares for a total offering size of US$1.63 billion or RM 6.64 billion, assuming the underwriters do not exercise their option to purchase additional ADSs, a statement said.

Each of the ADSs is representing four Class A ordinary shares of the company. It have been approved for listing on the NASDAQ Global Select Market and are expected to begin trading today under the symbol ‘PDD´.

The underwriters have been granted a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional 12.84 million ADSs from Pinduoduo or equivalent of 51.36 million Class A ordinary shares which would contribute to additional gross proceeds of US$244 million or RM 993.08 million.

Among the joints bookrunners for the offering includes Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, CICC and China Renaissance.

Pinduoduo provides buyers with value-for-money merchandise and fun and interactive shopping experiences. Its mobile platform offers a comprehensive selection of attractively priced merchandise, featuring a dynamic social shopping experience.
