KER1M WANTS TIGHTER SEAT BELT ENFORCEMENT

PUTRAJAYA, April 7 (Bernama) -- 1Malaysia People's Welfare Association (KER1M) wants tighter seat belt enforcement to reduce risk of death to motorists.

KER1M chairman Datuk Ranjith Raja said this was because public awareness about the risks of driving without seat belts was still at a low level.

"The study shows that the level of awareness, attitude and compliance with the law in the installation of seat belts for front and rear seat passengers is still not satisfactory," he said in a statement here Thursday.

He said KER1M has held discussions with the relevant agencies, including the Road Transport Department (RTD) and have made recommendations to ensure the strict enforcement of seat belt laws, besides making the wearing of seat belts for rear seat passengers compulsory.

"The driver must ensure that each passenger in the vehicle wears the seat belt before travelling. Parents should also provide special children's seat and apply the function button for the child safety lock to avoid the risk of death in case of an accident," he said.

Ranjith said KER1M planned to hold courses and road safety campaigns so that the driver is always in an alert state, following the guidelines, reference tips and safety tips to avoid negligence.
