Cyberport discusses RegTech’s potential, advantages at Hong Kong FinTech Week

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 -- As a FinTech partner at Hong Kong FinTech Week, Cyberport has been discussing the RegTech’s development potential and Hong Kong’s advantages.

The five-day Hong Kong FinTech Week began on Nov 2.

According to a statement, Cyberport invited scholars, outstanding financial industry leaders and its community start-ups to the ‘FinTech Studio’ session.

Cyberport’s RegTech start-ups noted the current global financial industry’s annual spend on compliance topped US$780 billion, and it is expected that RegTech can seize 10 per cent of this market share within just three years. (US$1 = RM4.155)

The participating start-ups believe that RegTech will be applied by banks and other financial institutions, and that its huge market potential will attract more investors.

In addition, representatives from the RegTech Association of Hong Kong and the FinTech Association of Hong Kong, as well as Professor Douglas Arner from the University of Hong Kong Department of Law, also shared their views on Hong Kong’s advantages in developing RegTech.

They believed as an international financial centre, Hong Kong features a vibrant financial market and a comprehensive legal and regulatory system.

The financial and technology talent pool, together with informational and financial connectivity, provides a sound foundation for Hong Kong to develop into a regional RegTech centre.

Cyberport recently launched its ‘Blockchain and RegTech Speaker Series’, explaining how the application of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to compliance procedures can reduce the relevant costs and accelerate the financial industry’s digital transformation.

AM Best assigns Bank of China Group Insurance Company Limited Credit Ratings

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 -- AM Best has assigned a Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of ‘a-’ to the Bank of China Group Insurance Company Limited (BOCGI) Hong Kong.

According to a statement, the outlook assigned to these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable.

The ratings reflect the company’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best described as strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.

BOCGI’s strong balance sheet strength assessment is underpinned by its strongest level of risk-adjusted capital, as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio.

The company’s adequate operating performance is supported by a five-year average return-on-equity ratio of 8.4 per cent.

Overall net profit is mainly supported by investment returns from BOCGI’s share of associate companies and a stable stream of interest and dividend income, although its combined ratio was above 100 per cent over the past five years (2015 to 2019).

This year, the company conducted a portfolio review exercise and trimmed its non-performing books and channels.

While future premium growth is expected to be steered by direct and inward property reinsurance business, AM Best views the inward property book’s catastrophe exposures as potentially adding volatility to the company’s overall underwriting performance.

BOCGI ranks as the sixth largest insurer in Hong Kong’s non-life market, based on a 3.4 per cent share of direct premium written in 2019. More details at www.ambest.com

Christie CounterAct to reduce pathogens in commercial indoor venues

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 -- Christie® has launched the Christie® CounterAct™ line of commercial UV disinfection products with patented Care222® far-UVC light technology for cinemas, theme parks, museums, sports complexes and other indoor spaces.

Unlike comparable products, the Christie fixture uses Ushio’s patented narrowband filtered Care222 excimer lamps that emit far-UVC 222nm light - the only UV technology shown to continuously and significantly reduce pathogens, like coronaviruses.

It may also be used while people are present, when used in accordance with specified parametres. Mass production of the new Christie CounterAct fixture starting January, next year.

Developed by Christie’s parent company, Ushio Inc, based on technology licensed from Columbia University, the revolutionary Care222 far-UVC, mercury-free excimer lamp includes a proprietary short pass filter that prevents the emission of longer wavelengths of UV light (230nm and higher) that are capable of penetrating human skin and eyes.

“The fact that far-UVC light – specifically, our new Christie CounterAct far-UVC fixture – can be used in the presence of people is a real differentiating factor,” said Christie president and COO, Zoran Veselic.

“By harnessing these benefits as part of a user-friendly product that can be quickly deployed, we hope to provide a much-needed boost to our partners across the entertainment industry who are currently struggling to attract wary customers.”

According to a statement, Christie CounterAct is a line of fixtures that are simple to control remotely and can be installed on ceilings as easily as a commercial lighting fixture.

It is well suited for use across a wide range of occupied, commercial areas such as entertainment venues, including lobbies, auditoriums and restrooms.

Japan AQS confirms NIAH isolation of ASF virus from illegally-brought pork

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 -- Gene of African swine fever (ASF) virus was recently confirmed as a result of the gene test on pork sausages illegally brought into Japan by a passenger from the Philippines.

The test was carried out by Animal Quarantine Service (AQS), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Japan, according to a statement.

Live virus was also isolated from the products as a result of virus isolation carried out by the National Institute of Animal Health (NIAH), the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization.

After a quarantine detector dog at Haneda airport found the meat products, AQS disposed of them as prohibited import products, and a part was sent for testing.

AQS has been testing the ASF virus gene on pork products illegally brought by international passengers since August 2018, and this is the 89th case found to be ASF gene positive and is the third case that the infectious ASF virus is isolated.

Animal products including ham, bacon, jerky, sausage and processed meat products are prohibited to be brought into Japan, regardless of volume, in accordance with the Act on Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control.

AQS will continue to strengthen import inspection of animal products to prevent the incursion of ASF through international passengers and parcels by utilising quarantine detector dogs at international airports and post offices.

Violators shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to three years or a fine of up to JPY3 million. Business corporations shall be punished with a fine of up to JPY50 million. Passengers with illegal animal products may also be denied permission for landing in Japan. (JPY100 = RM3.968)
